Passionate about theatre? Looking to discover your hidden talents? Join Acting Studio Company and gain an accelerated introduction to acting and theatre.

Located in the arts precinct at the Southbank campus in the purpose-built acting studios of VCA Theatre, this part-time year-long program for adults will offer you an inspiring learning environment to develop fundamental performance skills.

This intensive course is modelled on VCA Theatre’s Bachelor of Fine Art (Acting) and is designed to augment your creative potential and develop you as an actor. It is a perfect opportunity to gain invaluable skills, experience and insights into acting alongside others who share your love of theatre.

You will be guided by professional dedicated actors, practising educators and industry professionals and gain valuable insights in:

  • Vocal and physical technique
  • Improvisation and impulse work
  • Movement and physical presence
  • Solo and ensemble skills
  • Approach to text
  • Text, scene analysis and character development
  • Acting to Camera
  • Understanding Shakespeare
  • Scene study
  • Monologue preparation

Acting Studio offers you a range of performance opportunities to apply your training and skills. You will learn how to be open, confident, responsive and collegiate in rehearsal, in performance and on set. You will understand how to approach complex contemporary and classic texts, including Shakespeare, and learn how to trust your impulses as a performer.

Foundation Skills in Acting will give you a dynamic introduction to fundamental training in body and voice skills. You will learn to value your imagination, trust your impulses, be responsive to space, text and action, and apply your new skills to performance.

Contemporary Text
introduces you to core acting skills. This unit gives you practical skills in text analysis, character development and furthers your understanding of the actor’s process using intensive scene studies from a contemporary Australian play.

Film and Television/Screen Acting
Working with a range of film and television scripts, you will continue to apply acting processes, while also responding to the particular demands of the medium. You will have the opportunity to shoot a short scene in the studios of the VCA School of Film & TV.

Shakespeare offers a hands-on approach to understanding, learning and performing classical texts. You will work on Shakespeare scenes as well as monologues suitable for auditions for a drama school or industry context.

Contemporary Play explores the individual and ensemble processes that translate written plays to staged performances. At the conclusion of this unit, you will have developed the crucial ability to make choices and act upon your own decisions in creative situations. You will work towards a studio presentation of a contemporary play.
